Backup

This section allows the set up and access of system backups. Scheduling regular system backups is also recommended and can save a lot of time if the system were ever to fail.

Version: 4.3.0.6

Default Backup

IMPORTANT: If a backup of an old system is restored to new physical hardware (as might be the case in the event of a hardware failure) a new license will need to be applied before any of the hardware spans (and thus outbound calling) will function. To have a new license applied call Phonesuite tech support at 800-245-9933.

We recommend that a reseller always keep a local backup of the system post install for emergencies or in cases where Phonesuite is not immediately available.

Note: There is a browser-imposed size limit for uploads of 300MB. If you need to upload a backup larger than 300MB the SFTP file transfer tool in the console can be used as well as a Windows to Linux file transfer tool such as WinSCP. Backups can be loaded into the directory /data/ring/manual_backups.

Visual Overview

This page contains the system backups as well as the ability to create backups on demand and upload and restore backups from other systems. Note that each time a backup is restored a restore point is created first. This allows the system to be restored to the state it was in before the first restore.

Store any backups securely, the backup contains passwords for all SIP devices.

Line by Line Explanation

Each item in the help page will have an expand along with the information from the help page.

A list of all current backups available to the system are located here. A date of when the backup was created is listed along with the backup’s size in megabytes (MB). If the system needs to be restored simply select the appropriate backup (if no backups are listed see the below section Manual Backups) and click restore. These files can also be downloaded from the system to the hard drive or deleted.

Because the backup files can be quite large a max total of backups the system will keep can be entered here. It is recommended that this be set to 14.

This is the time (in a 24 hour format) when the system will back up. Choose a time (usually at night) when the system and the local network is not likely to be in heavy use.

Selecting between local (the hard drive of the Voiceware server) and cloud backups (Phonesuite Hosted) can be accomplished here. This should always be set to Phonesuite Hosted.

This selection allows the setting of how often the system will backup to the cloud or will send an email notification that the backup is ready to be manually downloaded. If weekly is selected then the backup or email will occur every Sunday. Note that if local backup is selected (above) and the email interval is set to weekly the backups will still be created daily but the email will only be sent weekly.

Enter VWSupport@phonesuite.com in this field, additional email addresses can be added, separate with a space.

The text entered here will be displayed as the subject line on every backup e-mail. This text should include the hotel name and possibly address or some other unique identifier.

At any time a backup can be manually created. This is used just before making any system upgrades or performing maintains. As in the Automatic Backups section files from this list can be used to restore the system, downloaded to the hard drive, or be deleted. It is recommended that an install create and download a backup of any system once installation and setup are complete. That way there is always a “last line of defense” backup if one is needed. This backup should be stored (on a CD or flash drive) with the other files from the installation (such as custom sound files) in a secure location (as the backup file includes SIP phone passwords and other sensitive information).

A backup file from a separate location can be uploaded here. Simply click on “Browse” and select the backup file then click on “Upload Backup”. This will add the backup to the list of Manual Backups and allow the system to be restored from it. A restore operation will automatically create a restore point file that captures the state of the system before the restore operation. This can be used to roll back to the previous system state if necessary.

Uploaded Backups:

This tab allows upload of manual backups created from other systems. Simply click Browse, browse to the files location, and click open. Once selected click on Upload Backup to load the backup into the system. This new backup can then be restored on this page.

Hosted Backups:

This page contains the last backup sent up to the cloud hosted site. It can be deleted, downloaded to local storage, or restored to the system.
